Our Great New Zealand South Island Bike Tour

Week 3

by Pamela Blalock with (most) photos by John Bayley

The first thing we did this week (and our motivation for this trip, was to walk the Milford Track .

Once off the track, we took a bus back to Glenorchy and retrieved our tandem. We sent the backpacks back to Queenstown, where I would arrange shipping back to Nelson. I hadn't really thought about it being Saturday when we arrived in Queenstown, and I found out the hard way that I couldn't arrange shipping until Monday (or so I thought).

It was OK, because it gave us an excuse to spend two nights in Queenstown and take a cruise over to Walter Peak High Country Sheep Station and ride out and back on a quiet gravel road to the Mavora Lakes. We took the TSS Earnslaw across Lake Wakatipu, along with 4 other touring cyclists. They were planning to camp overnight at the lake, while we were just going out for lunch and returning that evening.

After a week of walking it was nice to have another day of reprieve from traffic. The weather was lovely, although a bit chilly. I think that the sheep ran away from us for fear we would steal their wooly coats! We took heaps of pictures and they all came out great, so it's been very difficult to select just a few!

We got back to the dock well before the next sailing, so we were able to go watch a sheep shearing and pester the shearer with lots of questions about our favorite Merino Sheep.

It was a shame we hadn't arranged to have dinner at the station. The menu looked very appetizing. Maybe next time.
